Kevin Hines:
My name is Kevin Hines. I've become a public speaker, author, and activist on many things mental and behavioral health. I reside in the great city of San Francisco in the beautiful state of California. Like my biological parents before me, I have bipolar disorder, a disease that certainly affects all of my friends, family, acquaintances and affects the way I think, act and feel. Prior to my diagnosis, I wrote a deep-seated limerick to myself while battling with mental struggles. I wrote about how my brain, body, and mind felt. It went like this: He is ancient yet ageless. He is ticking yet timeless. He runs, not hunted, he chases. He is a man of many faces. He is the darkness. I am the light. Today, I aptly titled it after my diagnosis The Bipolar Mind. It rings so true to myself today. Due to this brain illness, I attempted to take my own life in a way that is almost ninety-nine percent fatal. But by heaven's good graces, I survived. Even today, I ask myself the two questions. Why am I here? What is my purpose? The resounding internal answer is not to sit idly by, watching television or playing video games, eating potato chips, but to stand up and fight. Fight for.. through my depression, fight through the pain. And every member of the audience I must fight for as I speak to them. Fight for those suffering and let them believe, let them know that they are not, nor will they ever be alone. My life's purpose is to tell them my story, which is not just my story, it's the human story, it's every story. It is our story. And to tell my story on a far and wide-scale, hoping to inspire those suffering with mental health and emotional, behavioral health issues and challenges of any kind. I am proof positive that the collective "we" can get better with time and find wellness after a great deal of hardship. And using hard work like routine sleep, exercise, and tremendous education as to our particular challenges and difficulties. But most importantly, I want them to hear me and then find their voice. Their voice to talk to the people closest to them who love and care for them and aid in their everyday triumph over such tremendous adversity.
