Kevin Hines:
My name is Kevin Hines. I jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge. I believe that I had to die, but I lived. Today, I travel the world with my lovely wife, Margaret, sharing stories of people who have triumphed over incredible adversity. Now, we help people be here tomorrow. Welcome to the HINESIGHTS podcast.
Kevin Hines:
Hey, what's cracking, Hope Nation? It is your friendly neighborhood, Kevin Hines, and we are here with another round of Ask Kev. The next question I've been asked, it's a very serious one so I want to bring it back down to the calm, the quiet, and the cool, and really give you my best answer for this question. The question I was asked on the internet, through social media is this time, today, was what are your three tips to getting through suicidal thoughts or thinking? So, my first tip to defeating suicidal ideation is to tell it to someone that you love immediately. Tell someone that loves you, who can empathize with your pain, that you are having these thoughts so that you're not in these thoughts by yourself, and so that you can have someone to be by your side in that pain so you can defeat it. My second tip for defeating suicidal ideation is that you have to recognize in that moment that your thoughts do not have to become your actions. You've probably heard me say this in my speeches. It's very true. It's been true since I said it before. Your thoughts do not have to become your actions. If you can recognize, in suicidal crisis, that your thoughts don't have to own, rule, and define your next action, you can always stay here. The prime example I use when I'm giving my speeches is I have people in the audience I say, how many of you, if you all let your thoughts become your actions, would be in jail right now for road rage. All the hands in the audience go up, like if you let your thoughts become your actions all the time, we'd all be in heck of a lot of trouble, wouldn't we? For all the things we think that we don't do. So if you can put that and that's practice, in with suicidal crisis, you can always stay here. You can be here tomorrow and every day after that. You are important and you matter and you matter to me. So that's tip number two. Tip number three is a little more serious and a little more, a hard thing to do but necessary. If you are a detriment to yourself and you are in danger of crisis in an imminent danger of taking your life, the best thing you can do is call upon the authorities to get you to a safe place, like a psych hospital or psych unit to make sure that you're safe for that moment in time and you don't take your life, and you take the time in solitude, in this crisis center or in a psych unit to stabilize. Now, I know it's really hard in this country because there are not enough beds, there are not enough units, there is not enough clinical care in the world for everyone. But do the best you can if you're in that moment, to be self-aware in that moment, and reach out to the authorities to get yourself to a safer place, so that you're not going to self-harm, you're not going to take your life. You know why, guys? You know why? Because I believe suicide is not the answer. I know there's some folks that think about it all the time. They're chronically suicidal and they can't break free from it, but it's not the answer. You are so beautiful, you are so important, you matter so much to me, and I want you to know that I hope whatever you're going through these thoughts, you find solace in these messages I'm giving and you find hope within them and find that light at the end of the tunnel. Because if you don't even see that light at the end of the tunnel, it's there, you just haven't walked far enough to reach it. Once again, be kind, be compassionate, loving, caring, empathetic, and non-judgmental to every single person you ever come into contact with, and be good to yourself and be here tomorrow. Bye, guys. Hey, and by the way, if you like these and you want to share them with a friend, I'd appreciate it, maybe you can help someone you love, in need. Bye, guys, and be here tomorrow.
